RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Virginia's governor is among the highest paid governors in the country.

Terry McAuliffe is tied for fourth in the nation when excluding the governors who decided to skip the paychecks.

He makes $175,000 a year. His salary is set by the General Assembly, and it hasn't changed in 10 years. It also can't be changed while he's in office, so the pay for the commonwealth's top job will sit at $175,000 through 2018.

According to an annual study released by the Council of State Governments, Pennsylvania's governor makes the most at $190,000 a year. He's followed by Tennessee at $187,500, California at $182,000 and New York, Illinois and then Virginia. But the governors in both Tennessee and Illinois return their salaries to the state, which makes McAuliffe the fourth highest paid governor in the country.

In all, four governors don't accept a paycheck: Alabama, Florida, Illinois and Tennessee.

Alabama's governor says he's not accepting a salary until the unemployment rate d rops in his state.

Others have incredible net worth and just don't need the money.

NBC12 has reached out to the governor's office multiple times to see if McAuliffe has ever considered giving his paycheck back to the state, but his office has not yet responded.
